Meanwhile… We Like Controllers

Meanwhile… we’ve actually been playing games. Each week we recap our recent gaming experiences and tell you what we’re looking forward to, so you can use your time more wisely than we have. Only two of us are swayed by the potential of becoming the controller when Kinect is released later this week. The rest of The Cursed continue to peck away at their game of choice while they watch their gaming queue grow out of the corner of their eye.

Stop looking at me

Well, Rock Band 3 exceeded even my highest expectations. Right now, I can’t ever see a reason for a Rock Band 4, they have perfected the platform. I even got to test it out at a few Halloween parties this weekend, along with some hilarious Def Jam Rapstar action. In between songs, I put a bit more time into Costume Quest and I still immensely adore that game especially since it fit so well with Halloween. Then, I changed things up and put a solid block of hours into Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. I have tremendous respect for this game and feel like I’m about to converted into a huge Ninja Theory fan by the end of this game.

I’ll be cranking through as many of the Rock Band 3 guitar achievements as possible this week, while trying to finish Enslaved. If I see a Kinect in stores with Dance Central, I will cave and buy it. Plus, I really want to see if Kinectimals and hold the attention of my girlfriend’s daughter (or maybe I kind of want to play it myself).

Costume Quest

I already miss Halloween

I went back to the well last week and re-fired up some Portal. I just bought some memory for my iMac, so it runs a lot better than before even. Even though the frame rate isn’t the best, it’s still playable. I was trying to play it on a Macbook Pro before that, and it was damn near impossible with the trackpad. Other than that, I finished Costume Quest this past week. What a great little downloadable game. Sure it’s repetitive but I had a lot of fun with it and ended up getting all 200 achievement points, which is almost impossible not to do. I don’t know how many traditional controller based games I’ll be playing this week because of the Kinect, but I haven’t pre-ordered it anywhere so it might be difficult to find. If I do get one, it will be all Dance Central for me, oh and probably some Kinect Adventures as well.

Still chipping away at Fallout: New Vegas and am still loving every second of it. I am about 30 hours into it and am delaying completion of the main story because I don’t want it to end. There are more than enough side quests, activities and exploration to facilitate this action, so I should be ok for another few weeks.

Popped into Batman: Arkham Asylum and was really impressed with it. I love the fighting mechanics and the setting is pretty grim, closer to the Nolan Batman than the Schumaker.

Played a bit of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and I gotta say that it will be a tough one to complete, not because it sucks but because its creepy as hell. The setting is great and will be a nice change of pace from the more modern places I’ve been exploring. Definately a niche game, but the developers really know how to keep the tension going.

I rushed out and got Rock Band 3 last Monday night, but I haven’t really had time to play too much. Having played piano before, I’m surprised how much I’m struggling with it. I think part of it is the interface and part of it is the keyboard doesn’t play the notes out loud. I received Singularity from Gamefly which I played through in one sitting. It was basically a game that stole several things that worked in other games, those being Bioshock, Gears of War, Portal, Arkham Asylum, and Halo. It was so shameless, I really couldn’t enjoy it. Had I played it first though, I’m sure I would have loved it. This week, if I have time, I’d like to go back and play a little Crackdown 2 Toybox expansion and Bioshock 2 Minerva’s Den expansion.

Fable 2

Stop playing with yourself

Right now I’m mostly playing Fable II. I picked it up free that day Microsoft screwed up and it’s been a nice change of pace from the other games I’ve been playing. It’s interesting though how during Red Dead Redemption I could play the outlaw and break the law, but in Fable, I have no issues being evil.

I don’t know if I ever mentioned that I was playing Shank here and there, but I finally finished the single player story. It was a fun game overall, but I didn’t find it to be as strategic as I’d read that it is. It was really more of a button masher for me. Maybe I wasn’t playing it right?… idk, but I made it through. Maybe one day I’ll try it again on Hard…. but probably not… I think once is enough. I also got in a smidge of StarCraft 2 campaign. I’m playing that game at a snails pace. I should be through it by the time SC3 is released in 2023. What are games going to be like in 2023?! I wish I could see the future. Speaking of… I’d kind of like to play Fable 3.

Finally got a little gaming time in tonight after a pretty dry week. I’ve been working on a few iPhone games and finally beat Myst early last week, but my heart’s been playing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow even if the controller hasn’t been in my hands. Until tonight, when I got through the rest of Chapter 1 of that game. I have to say I am still in love with that game. The story, the VO, the graphics, the gameplay. Love it. Again, this is probably because I haven’t played many other games like it, but strictly looking at it in terms of Castlevania, it mimics Simon’s Quest in all the ways I want, and blows all the previous 3D Castlevania’s away. I can’t wait to get back into that game this week!

Also, lots of other games I want to play but not sure when I’ll actually get around to purchasing them as a few of them will likely have to wait until the Holidays. I’m looking forward to DJ Hero 2 and Rock Band 3, and I think in the next few weeks Beth and I may pick up Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4. I’ve liked the other Lego games I’ve played and we frickin’ love Harry Potter so we’re probably going to use some anniversary money and pick it up :)

It’s been almost a month since I’ve touched my xbox, but I finally got an internet connection and ready to go on live. I will likely get some Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: Reach gaming in this week before next week, when I’m debating whether I should buy COD: Black Ops or not.

I grabbed Plants vs. Zombies while it was on sale for Halloween, and I’ve been so hooked on it I’ve been planting sunflowers in my sleep. I’ve also been playing Fable II, and I can’t decide if I like it or not.

Snoopy Flying Ace

Snoopy D-O-G

This week was all Fable III, all the time. I’ve been spending a significant amount of my free time with that game, which is a pretty good reason why I am writing this at 6:45am, not having slept yet. Pretty much everything I loved about the first two games is there so, overall, I’ve been enjoying it, despite some truly baffling interfaces choices they’ve made, navigation that occasionally decides not to show up to work, and a dog that, once in a while, gets stuck inside a tree. Hopefully those bugs will get worked out and we’ll have what seems like, at the very least, a decent addition to the Fable line.

Having said all that, I do, as always, have some unfinished games in my queue that are begging for attention like Comic Jumper, Super Meat Boy, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, and Snoopy Flying Ace, which I finally got around to getting today, thanks to A) it being on sale currently and B) having watched “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” over the weekend.

Meanwhile… What are you playing?
