Game Time 5214: Civilized Superheroes Golfing with Alien Thieves

Easy there, worst character ever, it’s just a sand trap.

I recently made the shift to having my iPad completely dominate my mobile/couch gaming time. I’ll be curious to see if Mario Golf: World Tour can break into my Hearthstone obsession. The math looks right: I love Mario Golf games + it’s been a long ass time since I played Mario Golf or a golf game in general + plus online tournaments = 3DS hand cramps aplenty. Who wants to have a foursome? Justin L

Although I’m not going to pick it up, I’ve been watching the Homeworld 2 Mass Effect mod with some interest, not only because I love (almost) all things Mass Effect the exception: the Japanese hyper-sexualized Liara toy], but because I’m fascinated that the mod isn’t setting off IP protection alarm bells everywhere. Is this kind of thing covered somehow by fair use? Does it fall under the lines of remixes and sampling? I don’t know, but it’s pretty darn cool that it exists. – Justin G

I’ve found myself spending quite a bit of time with Civilization V, specifically the Brave New World expansion. I thought Civ 5 was a very solid game before, but BNW expands upon the original so much that I can’t believe I didn’t grab the expansion when it was originally released (around a year ago). It refines cultural victories as well as adding some new mechanics (such as spying and religion, though that was first introduced in a previous expansion called Gods and Kings). I’ve decided that I’m going to try for all the victory types (domination and diplomacy check) and work my way down the difficulty scale until it becomes frustrating. The reign of the backlog continues. – Ethan

What’s your story, turtle?

I’ve had really bad insomnia my entire life so I tend to just lay in bed for hours waiting to fall asleep. So, I’ve taken to watching playthroughs of games on YouTube with my iPhone. I was watching some Thief videos recently when I noticed that a “related video” was from the Sly Cooper series. Which makes me interested to know how YouTube made that suggestion. I’ll assume both games are tagged with enough “stealth, stealing, thief” keywords they seem similar enough to YouTube. I can’t say I’ve ever seen (or noticed) the Sly Cooper series in my entire life, which is a huge shame because I think I would have loved playing this series of games. I really enjoy videos games that aren’t trying to pretend to be anything more than just a fun video game. (Like all the LEGO video games. You smash something and it explodes with coins. I love it!) I started with the newest game, “Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time” and almost stopped there but then I saw a cutscene from the first game and Bentley (the mastermind turtle in the group) was running around instead of being in a wheel chair (which he is all through the newest game). This peaked my interest. It was already pretty interesting having a main character in a wheel chair, but I wanted to see why he was in a wheel chair. Were they going to just pretend that the first game didn’t exist and Bentley was always in a wheel chair. Nope… Bentley got his legs broken in the second game and it caused one of the gang to leave because he blamed and punished himself for the accident. WHAT THE HELL?! For being a playful and silly game about some anthropomorphic rodents running around without pants (everyone wears a shirt… no one is wearing pants), the story got pretty serious in spots. Even though its taken me about a month I’m all caught up on my Sly Cooper lore and ready for the movie! Come on 2016 I can’t wait! – Jordan

I have been playing Batman: Arkham City lately. I have bought so much recently that I’ve been neglecting my backlog, but this was one that I didn’t want to let slide. So far I’m loving it. It’s just solid Batman action, and I’m enjoying the size of the city. I have a pretty terrible track record with finishing open world games, but hopefully I can keep the momentum up on this one and see it through. – Coop

What are you playing?
