I stumbled across an article while browsing Joystiq the other day about a game jam with a very unique premise. Asylum Jam will take place October 11th through the 13th and will challenge players to create a horror game without falling back on tropes dealing with mental illness. This includes things like insane asylums, psychiatric wards and patients dealing with mental illness.
I think it’s a very interesting theme considering just how many games/movies use the concept of mental illness as the foundation for their story, though I’ve never thought that it was a trope that was overused necessarily. That being said, I never really considered the way in which women are portrayed in games either and my eyes have definitely been opened up in that department recently. I’m looking forward to see what comes out of it as mental illness is a subject that’s been coming to the forefront as of late and games tend to get tied negatively into that conversation as well.
